As every boot lover knows, finding footwear that looks fabulous and fits comfortably is a tricky proposition. Even if you are equipped with the perfect pair of boots, pairing them with the wrong outfit can create a fashion disaster. Some flamboyant types can pull off the combat-boots-with-evening -gown look, but for most of us it’s better to stick with the basics of boot fashion wear. Please keep in mind that this is a basic guide for mainstream fashions. If you are bold enough to wear unique boots and dress out-of-the-box, don’t be afraid to disregard the following tips and do your own thing!

Classy/Conservative looks: In general, the shorter the skirt, the lower the heel. Longer skirts can accommodate higher heels, but, the style must be compatible.

Sexy/Provocative looks: The shorter the skirt and higher the heel, the more emphasis your legs will receive. Not everyone can pull off a mini skirt and very high heel, so be mindful not to strut across the line from sexy into trashy territory. The difference can be largely dependent upon how you carry yourself, but don’t be afraid to try something daring.

Boots that “POP” - Unique Boots: To make your boots the focus of your outfit, wear clothes that allow the full boot to be seen (such as a skirt) or try coordinating a high-contrast combination in the color of your outfit and boots. Something as simple as a pair of black boots, for example, will stand out if you wear them with a white or light-colored outfit. Pairing light colored clothing with dark colored boots, and vice versa, will get them noticed.

Heavy, chunky boots can cause your legs to look heavier.

Opt for a slightly tapered toe and more graceful heel over a square-toed, fat-heeled boot. Your best bets are styles that are neither too delicate nor too clunky.

Slim heel shapes will make you look taller and more graceful than chunky ones.

Boots with even as little as a one-inch heel will give you a much longer, leaner line than a boot with a totally flat sole.

The flatter your boot, the more narrow your pants can be.

Boots with tapered toes will make the foot look longer and narrower.

When wearing skirts or other leg-displaying attire, keep your boots the same tone as your hose and it will visually lengthen your legs.

To make big feet appear smaller, make sure your boot’s soles are cut to the foot (i.e., they do not have an extended sole that shows around the edges).

While these boot style tips should be helpful to women of any age, the exception to the rules is youth.

If you are young, wearing trendy (even ugly trendy) clothing, shoes, boots, etc., is more accepted and somewhat expected. However, for more formal dressing (i.e., funerals, job interviews, etc.), it is nice to keep these rules of thumb in mind.

No matter your age, when it comes to boots, quality counts. Boots, by their very design, protect your feet and legs. So, buy the best you can afford!
